Empathy is important as it helps us to understand how others are feeling so we can respond appropriately to the situation. It is typically associated with social behaviour and there is lots of research showing that greater empathy leads to more helping behaviour.

You will be more likely to treat the people you care about the way they wish you would treat them. You will understand better the needs of people around you. You will clearly understand the perception you create in others with your words and actions.You will better understand the needs of your customers at work.

Providing empathy in customer service means that you allow the customer to feel heard by acknowledging their feelings.  Empathy in customer service is especially important because it helps to: De-escalate a conflict.

Empathy is the ability to accurately put yourself "in someone else's shoes"โ€“ to understand the other's situation, perceptions and feelings from their point of view โ€“ and to be able to communicate that understanding back to the other person. Empathy is a critical skill for you to have as a leader.
Examples of Empathetic Responses
1. Acknowledge their pain.
2. Share how you feel.
3. Show gratitude. 
4. Show interest. 
5. Be encouraging. 
6. Be supportive.

Empathy generates an interest in and appreciation for others, paving the way to more productive working relationships. As managers hone their empathetic leadership skills, they improve their leadership effectiveness and increase their chances of success in the job.

Exhibiting empathy at the workplace.
For example, you likely smile and take the trouble to remember people's names: that's empathy in action. Giving people your full attention in meetings, being curious about their lives and interests, and offering constructive feedback are all empathic behaviors, too. Practice these skills often.

Empathy allows you to create an environment of open communication and more effective feedback. It allows us to understand and explore problems employees face and how to help them resolve them. Being empathetic with your employees helps to validate what they're going through.
